27 killed as tour bus overturns in Cameron Highlands

IPOH: Twenty-seven passengers of a tour bus were killed after the vehicle hit a divider and overturned on its way down from Cameron Highlands Monday.

Twenty-two died at the scene of the accident and five at the Raja Permaisuri hospital here. Another 10 injured were being treated at the hospital.

This is believed to be the worst road accident in the nation's history.

Those killed were two Malaysians and 25 Thai nationals. The bus had 37 passengers onboard, 34 of them Thai tourists.

According to Perak state deputy CPO SAC Datuk Zakaria Yusof, the cause of the accident could have been speeding or brake failure.

"The driver was trying to negotiate a sharp bend but failed, causing the vehicle to hit a divider before overturning.

"The bus landed on its roof in a ditch about 51m away from the divider," SAC Zakaria said, adding that the impact killed 22 of the victims on the spot.

The accident occured at KM15 of the Cameron Highlands-Simpang Pulai road at 11.40am. The bus was heading to Kuala Lumpur from Cameron Highlands.

It is learn that the excursion bus company is registered in Jitra.

The impact of the crash was so severe that bodies were flung several metres away from the wreckage while others were trapped deep in the mangled vehicle.

It took about 100 police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Department and Public Works Department personnel over three hours to retrieve the bodies.

The wreckage was finally towed downhill at about 4pm, causing massive jams on both sides of the road as far as 5km away.

It is learnt that of the 10 survivors, one was discharged after being treated for minor injuries, three were undergoing surgery and the rest warded, as at 7pm.

Meanwhile, the police have issued the names of 26 of those killed. They are:

KOTA BAHARU, Dec 15 (Bernama) -- Shocking, but true. Some teenage drug addicts are offering their girlfriends, including schoolgirls, to drug peddlers for a night of passion, in exchange for 'pil kuda' (psychotropic pills).

This 'business transaction' has been cited as a reason for the hike in sexual crimes in Kelantan.

State police deputy chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Mazlan Lazim said investigations revealed that teenagers hooked on 'pil kuda', offered their girlfriends to drug peddlers for a night of sex.

In return, the teenagers would be given their supply of the pills, he said.

"Such alarming activity also involved schoolboys aged between 14 and 16, who already had sex with their girlfriends," he told reporters here Wednesday.

He said, between January and Dec 12, this year, 296 rape cases were reported to the police, including the 'exchange' of girlfriends for a supply of 'pil kuda'.

He called on parents to monitor their daughters' activities to prevent them from getting involved with drug addicts.

Big earthquake hits northwest China - High death toll feared

A strong earthquake killed at least 67 people and buried "many" others on Wednesday in northwestern China's remote Qinghai province, the government said.

Many houses have collapsed, roads have been damaged or blocked by landslides and telecommunications has been disrupted, local officials said after the quake which was measured by the US Geological Survey at a magnitude of 6.9.

"Soldiers have been dispatched to save the people buried in the collapsed houses," the official Xinhua news agency quoted a local official, Huang Limin, as saying.

The China Earthquake Administration put the magnitude of the quake in the remote high-altitude region at 7.1, saying at least 67 people were confirmed dead.

It said there was extensive damage to local structures, collapsing many, and caused cracks in a local dam.

The USGS said the quake hit at 7:49 am (2349 GMT Tuesday) and was centred 380 kilometres (240 miles) south-southeast of the city of Golmud, at a depth of 46 kilometres,

Three aftershocks rattled the area shortly after the quake, with magnitudes of up to 5.8, the USGS reported.

Calls by AFP to local government headquarters and businesses in Yushu county, the quake's epicentre, went unanswered as the earthquake administration said the quake caused disruptions to telecommunications in the area.

The county has a population of about 80,000 people.

Xinhua quoted officials saying rescue personnel and equipment were being rushed to the area but warned they could be hampered as roads had been damaged or blocked by landslides.

The remote high-altitude region is prone to earthquakes. The zone, which is home to ethnic Mongolians and Tibetan farmers and herdsmen, is dotted with coal, tin, lead and copper mines.

A 6.2-magnitude quake rattled Golmud in August last year, triggering landslides and the collapse of about 30 homes, but there were no reports of casualties.

A massive 8.0-magnitude quake in May 2008 in neighbouring Sichuan province devastated a huge area of southwestern China, leaving at least 87,000 people dead or missing.

112 yr old man marries 17 yr old girl

Hundreds of people attended a wedding between a man who says he is 112 years old and his bride who is only 17.

The BBC reported Thursday that Ahmed Muhamed Dore - who already has 13 children by five wives - would like to have more with his latest, Safia Abdulleh.

"Today God helped me realise my dream," Dore was said, after the wedding in the region of Galguduud.

The bride's family said she was "happy with her new husband".

Dore said he and his bride - who is young enough to be his great-great-grand-daughter - were from the same village in Somalia and that he had waited for her to grow up to propose.

"I didn't force her but used my experience to convince her of my love and then we agreed to marry," he said.

The marriage, in the town of Guriceel, is being described by Somali historians as the first of its kind in the Horn of Africa nation for more than a century.
The reaction to news of the marriage has been mixed.

Some people said while it was allowed under Islamic law, they were concerned about the age gap, but others were happy that age was not a barrier to love.

Dore told the BBC he was born in Dhusamareeb in central Somalia in 1897 - and has a traditional birth certificate, written on goat skin by his father.

He joined the British colonial forces in 1941 and served as a soldier for 10 years. He later became a police officer after Somalia won independence in 1960.

Dore has a total of 114 children and grandchildren. His oldest son is 80 years old and three of his wives have died.

He hopes his new bride will give him more children.

"It is a blessing to have someone you love to take care of you," he said.

Rio de Janeiro has been chosen to stage the Olympics as Brazil becomes the first South American country to host Olympics. It defeated Madrid,
Chicago and Tokyo.
Its win came after emotional request from Brazil's President Rio to stage 2016 Olympic Games. Even Pele reduced to tears when the winner is announced. This selection would give oppurtunity for south american nations to feel the excitement of the Olympics.

Brazil will be hosting soccer World Cup in 2014. Hosting Top 2 sports events in the span of 2 years is not an easy task but if they succeded in doing so, it would be a great achievement.

Dale Neumann faces up to 25 years in prison

A US jury has found a man guilty of killing his sick 11-year-old daughter by praying for her recovery rather than seeking medical care.

The man, Dale Neumann, told a court in the state of Wisconsin he believed God could heal his daughter.

She died of a treatable disease - undiagnosed diabetes - at home in rural Wisconsin in March last year, as people surrounded her and prayed.

Neumann's wife, Leilani Neumann, was convicted earlier this year.

The couple, who were both convicted of second-degree reckless homicide, face up to 25 years in prison when they are sentenced in October.

A lawyer representing Dale Neumann said he would appeal.

'Faith healing'

During the trial, medical experts told the court that Neumann's daughter could have survived if she had received treatment, including insulin and fluids, before she stopped breathing.

On Thursday Neumann, who is 47 and studied in the past to be a Pentecostal minister, said he thought God would heal his daughter.

"If I go to the doctor, I am putting the doctor before God," he said. "I am not believing what he said he would do."

He also said he thought his daughter had had flu or a fever, and that he had not realised how ill she was.

Neumann's lawyer said he had been convinced that his "faith healing" was working, and that he had committed no crime.

The prosecution argued that Neumann had minimised his daughter's illness and that he had allowed her to die as a selfish act of faith.

They said the girl should have been taken to hospital because she was unable to walk, talk, eat or drink.

Instead, an ambulance was only called once the girl had stopped breathing.

Thousands have gathered in the capital city to show their protest against Internal Security Act (ISA) on 1 august 2009. The law has been against human rights for the over tens of years. Over this period it has been badly misused to the benefits of selfish leaders.

438 protesters have been arrested by the police on the day. Several landmarks have been targeted by this group such as Masjid Jamek, Sogo market, PAS HQ and few other places.

Police used tear gas and water cannon to dispersed the crowd. Few Member of Parliment and State Assemblyman joined the protest. The protest starts from 7am until 7pm.

Melayu Tak Wujud Sebenarnya - Malay Never Existed, Actually

Hang Tuah sebenarnya bukan Melayu; Hang Tuah sebenarnya orang berketurunan dari China mengikut kata sesetengah orang lah (bukan saya OK). Mengapa pula dikatakan begitu? Sebab diambil contoh dari Hang Li Po seorang puteri dari China, namanya bermula dengan Hang, atas dasar itu orang keturunan dari China maka namanya bermula dengan Hang dari perkataan “Han” iaitu nama satu dinasti lama di China. Hang Li Po bererti Li Po orang Han, itulah ceritanya maka atas sebab samalah Hang Tuah itu bukan Melayu. Kalau nak diikut begitulah Hang Jebat, Hang Lekir, Hang Lekiu dan juga Hang Kasturi. Malah ada yang lebih jauh mengatakan yang Hang Tuah itu namanya sebenar adalah Han Too Ah, Jebat pula Han Jee Fat (macam watak utama dalam komik Alam Perwira pulak) manakala Hang Lekiu pula adalah Han Lee Kiu.

Ada ada kemungkinan, mungkin betul, bunyinya macam betul, tapi kalau hendak diikutkan kesimpulan begini bolehlah saya mengatakan yang sebenarnya “Tong Sampah” bukanlah perkataan Melayu akan tetapi ianya berasal dari China. Ini adalah kerana Tong Sampah adalah dari Thong Sam Ah seorang ushawan karung guni berbangsa Hakka yang suka mengambil barang-barang lama di sekitar tahun awal 1930an di Taiping. Maka apabila ada barang hendak dibuang orang kampung suka berkata “ahh ko bagi la barang nak dibuang tu ke Thong Sam Ah, dia memang ambil barang hendak dibuang”. Bunyinya memang macam betul tapi itu tidak menyebabkan ianya fakta bukan walau berapa puluh kali saya mengulangi cerita ini sesungguhnya Tong Sampah bukanlah Thong Sam Ah.

Penulis telah beberapa kali juga terserempak dengan sesi perbincangan atau perbualan mengenai bagaimana sebenarnya konsep atau orang “Melayu” itu sendiri tidak wujud. Jangan kata Hang Tuah bukan Melayu, Melayu itu pun bukan Melayu. Dikatakan sebenarnya Melayu itu adalah ciptaan atau rekaan penjajah British yang hendak memudahkan pemerintahan di Malaya (Tanah Melayu tidak wujud ye dalam konsep ini).

Orang Melayu itu adalah rekaan semata-mata, kalau ikutkan “hakikat” yang ada adalah orang Jawa, Bugis, Minang, Siam, Acheh dan sebagainya. Malah orang Melayu (kerana ianya tidak wujud) bukanlah orang asal keturunan di semenanjung Malaya (Semenanjung Tanah Melayu tidak wujud) akan tetapi orang asal adalah Orang Asli dan bukanlah orang Melayu. Merekalah Bumiputera yang sebenarnya dan yang lain adalah rekaan semata-mata. Hujah ini banyak digunakan apabila sesetengah pihak hendak mempertikaikan atau mendebatkan mengenai Dasar Ekonomi baru atau hendak memarahi suatu parti politik tertentu. Penulis tidaklah mengatakan yang hendak memperdebatkan Dasar Ekonomi Baru itu salah, tapi janganlah sampai adat resam dan keturunan terus dipertikaikan dan dipersoalkan atau diperlekehkan. Hanya kerana kegiatan berpolitik berlebihan dan taksub marah terhadap sesuatu tak tentu pasal habis dijahanamkan dan dikorbankan adat resam dan kebudayaan yang umurnya bekurun-kurun lamanya. Maka terpaksalah sejarah ditulis semula yang Hang Tuah pernah mengatakan yang “Takkan Bugis, Jawa, Minang, Acheh, Bali, Baweyan dan sebagainya (bukan Melayu) hilang di dunia.” Penat tu nak sebut.

Itu yang membuatkan penulis rasa terkedu sedikit sejak kebelakangan ini kerana seolah-olah persepsinya bahawa segala yang penulis dibesarkan dengan, diajar dan bahasa ibunda sendiri adalah penipuan semata-mata. Rupa-rupanya segala adat resam seperti pantun, gurindam, Bahasa Melayu, baju Melayu, sepatu, kuih raya dan sajak malah sejarah sendiri adalah rekaan British semata-mata. Malah kalau nak diikutkan terpaksalah kita mengubah Rukun Negara nampak gayanya. Ini adalah kerana orang Melayu itu tidak wujud. Maka atas dasar itu terpaksalah kita mengakui yang Raja-Raja Melayu bukanlah pemerintah yang hak negara ini, masakan ada kesultanan Melayu kalau Melayu itu sendiri tidak wujud. Maka Rukun Negara yang kedua iaitu Kesetiaan Kepada Raja dan Negara terpaksalah dipinda, maka tak gunalah kita memakai baju kuning berarak ke Istana Negara dan menjerit Daulat Tuanku sambil menyerahkan memorandum.

Pembaca sekelian kalau hendak dikatakan Melayu itu tidak wujud atas sebab-sebab di atas maka bolehlah kita pertikaikan macam-macam. Kita bolehlah mengatakan bahawa orang Cina juga tidak wujud kerana yang ada adalah orang-orang Manchu, Hakka, Canton, Han dan sebagainya. Mandarin adalah ciptaan pemerintah kejam yang memaksa mereka ini berada dibawah pemerintahan Maharaja dan menghapuskan susur galur etnik. Begitu juga dengan tidak wujudnya orang India akan tetapi yang ada adalah Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Sinhala dan sebagainya. Bahawa India itu juga adalah ciptaan British. Maka atas dasar itu buat apa diadakan sekolah jenis kebangsaan yang mengajar dalam Bahasa Mandarin kerana Bangsa Cina itu tidak wujud, sepatutnya di Pulau Pinang diajar dalam bahasa Hokkien manakala di Kuala Lumpur diajar dalam bahasa Cantonese. Malah kalau nak diikutkan juga konsep bangsa Malaysia itu juga adalah ciptaan British kerana sebelum ini tidak wujud Malaysia sehinggalah pihak British mencadangkan untuk menggabungkan Semenanjung Tanah… Malaya dengan Sabah dan Sarawak. Oleh sebab kini Melayu sudah tidak wujud maka timbul juga persoalan tentang Brunei nanti, ye lah orang Brunei ini orang apa? Jawa? Bugis? Yahudi?

Seperti biasa pastinya banyak yang akan mengatakan bahawa semua ini adalah salah sebuah parti tertentu yang mempunyai nama Melayu didalamnya. Bahawa segala sejarah yang kita belajar ini adalah rekaan agenda politik tersembunyi dari mereka. Kalau anda berpendapat begitu itu adalah hak anda akan tetapi berfikirlah sebelum berkata-kata. Sesungguhnya kalau nak diikutkan begitu, orang yang paling berdosa adalah ketua pembangkan sekarang kerana suatu ketika dahulu dia adalah Menteri Pelajaran dari tahun 1986–1991 ketika mana banyak dasar-dasar dan buku teks sejarah ditulis ketika itu. Malah jangan lupa ketika itu dialah jaguh ketua pemuda yang hendak mengumpulkan setengah juga umat Melayu di Dataran Merdeka yang mencetuskan Operasi Lalang 1989. Tapi ye lah, itu dulu, masa bersongkok berbaju Melayu menjerit hidup Melayu. Sekarang dunia politik sudah berubah, lain padang lainlah belalang. Tapi betullah kalau hendak dikatakan semua masaalah politik sekarang berpunca dari satu parti, mana taknya kerajaan dan pembangkang sekarang semuanya berasal dari tempat yang sama.

Tidak salah kalau kita hendak mengkritik, berdebat atau kita hendak membincangkan tentang konsep kenegaraan dan hal-hal melibatkan politik. Demokrasi membenarkan ini semua dan ianya adalah suatu aktiviti pembetulan yang menyihatkan. Tapi janganlah sampai dikorbankan, dibunuh dan dipijak adat resam dan keturunan yang telah berlangsung selama beratus-ratus tahun hanya kerana aktiviti politik taksub yang berlebihan. Mungkin ini adalah perasaan penulis semata-mata tapi sejak kebelakangan ini banyak dilihat anak muda Melayu sendiri malu hendak mengaku Melayu.

Saya terus-terang mengatakan bahawa saya bukan anak Bangsa Malaysia, saya rasa saya tidak perlu malu, takut ataupun merasa berdosa mengaku diri saya ini orang Melayu. Saya adalah seorang Melayu yang merupakan warganegara Malaysia. Malah kalau nak diikutkan perlembagaan sesiapa sahaja tidak kira keturunan boleh mengaku dirinya Melayu, pergi baca. Dan kalau anda hendak mengaku diri anda Bangsa Malaysia, Iban, India, Cina, Hakka, Kadazan atau apa sekalipun saya tidak mempunyai masaalah, kita semua rakyat Malaysia. Suka hatilah janji anda bahagia, tapi janganlah hendak memadamkan identiti saya — itu salah dan tidak patut.

Saya hanya mempunyai masaalah dengan orang-orang yang dengan bangga dan lantang mengaku dirinya Bangsa Malaysia tapi sepatah haram Bahasa Malaysia pun tidak tahu. Bahasa Malaysia adalah bahasa yang digunakan hanya ketika hendak memesan nasi lemak dekat gerai makcik depan rumah. Tatabahasa yang ada cumalah nasi lemak, satu, bungkus, rendang daging, sambal kurang dan thank you. Yang kelakar apabila orang-orang ini dilihat lebih “Englishman” dari “Malaysian”. Saya ingat lah kan, tak perlulah kita buang identity Melayu, Cina, India, Iban, Kadazan atau apa-apa sekalipun kalau kita hendak bersatu dan mencapai perpaduan. Anggaplah macam kita ni semua rojak, lain rasa lain warna tapi bila campur dalam satu kuah sedap rasanya. Kalau semua sama pun bosan jugak kan. Nak tulis panjang lagi tapi tak pelah saya simpan lain kali.

Kayveas still PPP president, says ROS

The Registrar of Societies (ROS) said today that Datuk M. Kayveas is still the lawful president of People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

However, it was investigating complaints by various interested quarters within the party and scrutinising further information from all sides involved before the completion of the investigation, said ROS Director-General Datuk Md Alias Kalil said in a statement.

“In this regard, until the matter is finalised, ROS wishes to inform that Datuk M. Kayveas is still the lawful president of PPP.

“Hence, ROS has no objection to PPP proceeding with the scheduled Annual General Meeting,” he said.

On May 30, Kayveas was returned unopposed as PPP president for a fourth five-year term at the end of the nomination period and two days ago, he said PPP’s 56th General Assembly would take place as planned in three days time.

Earlier on May 24 however, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk T. Murugiah had declared himself the “new PPP president” following an extraordinary general meeting held in Putrajaya.

What is and isn't Islam?

I read this article and found it very interesting since the issue discussed is one of the thing has been troubling me, a non-muslim for years. I really do believe this would be beneficial for everyone especially for non-muslim.

It is not only important to explain what Islam really is, but it is also important to make a distinction between what Islam involves, and what people have incorrectly associated with and attributed to it.
What is the relation between Islam and the actions of people that practice the Muslim faith? In my opinion there are many things which have very little to do with Islam as a religion, but are nevertheless ascribed to it because the people who are linked to it happen to be Muslims.
Certain radical actions have been carried out by Muslim individuals or groups in the name of Islam, but those actions are not supported by the majority of Muslims, and are generally disapproved of by them, although sometimes their disapproval is not explicit enough to create the impression that the radical Muslims that carry out these actions do not in any way represent any Muslim majority.
Hot topic in the West
All this has contributed to existing misunderstandings. Many of these misunderstandings have to do with false perceptions, but not with academic reality. Although one might also argue that perceptions become academic realities if people believe their perceptions to be true.
The responsibility of scholars - both Muslim and non-Muslim - is therefore to subject these perceptions to a reality test, particularly if this can help in providing a global forum which would help create better mutual understanding, as well as a stronger cross-cultural friendship.
Islam is a hot topic in the West - and not only there, but also in the Muslim world itself. Many people talk about it, but much fewer people are knowledgeable about it. If you want to organise a seminar on "Democracy in South East Asia", for instance, it may not be that easy to raise funds for it. But if you add the word "Islam", and make it about the role of democracy and Islam in Southeast Asia, your chances become much better.
Nevertheless, it may be wrong to stress the idea of any connection between Islam and developments in the world. The danger exists that Islam becomes a kind of fixation, thereby adding to a misunderstanding between Muslims and non-Muslims or between so-called Muslim countries and non-Muslim countries.
When Islam spread outside the Arabian Peninsula and came into contact with other cultures, Islam adapted itself to these regions in the sense that various local habits and traditions were not only accepted as not contradicting those of Islam, but were later on sometimes interpreted by the local populations as being in line with Islam, if not Islamic. Many new Muslims continued part of their former traditions and gradually came to argue that these traditions were in fact part of Islam.
More generally, one might say that in large parts of Indonesia Islam has adapted itself to the local cultures and traditions, or has embedded itself into them, instead of adapting to the culture and traditions of the Arabian Peninsula. A similar phenomenon could be said to have taken place in other regions of what today is considered to be the Muslim world. In many places people interpret local habits or traditions as part of Islam, whereas they are not really. Also cultural manifestations based on different religious-cultural backgrounds generally coexist peacefully together in Indonesia.

It's cultural
Other Muslim countries have their own examples concerning the local cultural heritage and Islam existing side by side. It could be noted, for instance, that whereas in strongly traditional Islamic, Saudi Arabia women are prohibited from driving a car, the same is allowed in the Islamic Republic of Iran. These differences have nothing to do with Islam itself, but rather with different cultures existing in these countries.
Similarly, the harsh treatment of women by the Taliban in Afghanistan is much more a reflection of regional tribal customs and attitudes than a part of Islam. Throwing acid in women's faces happens in wider parts of Asia, including India and Cambodia, and can be seen as purely criminal. Other examples are female circumcision, most widely spread in Africa, and so-called "honour" killings.
But this does not prevent larger parts of the non-Muslim world from perceiving these attitudes as connected with Islam, which therefore generally has a non-favourable effect on the attitude towards Islam in the West.
Both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars have a common responsibility not only to explain relevant issues about Islam, but also to make clear what is not related to Islam, but rather to other factors, such as politics, culture and local traditions. In doing so, academics not only contribute to bridging misunderstandings but also correct inaccurate perceptions.
When exchanging views within the framework of an intercultural, or interfaith dialogue, we do not necessarily have to discuss religious issues as such. After all, it is common for most believers to consider their own beliefs to be the best and most correct. What is more important is to discuss underlying values and beliefs that the various parties may have in common.

N Korea 'names Kim's successor'

South Korean media say North Korea has told its diplomatic missions abroad that Kim Jong-il's youngest son has been named as the next leader.

Two newspapers and an opposition lawmaker said diplomats had been told to support Kim Jong-un.

South Korea's Hankook Ilbo and Dong-a Ilbo newspapers reported that the regime sent the message right after the 25 May nuclear test.

There has been much speculation over who would follow the ailing Mr Kim.

He suffered a stroke last year, but appears to have recovered somewhat.

Analysts have said the North's recent military actions, including last week's nuclear test, may be aimed at helping Mr Kim solidify power so that he can name a successor.

Little known

The reports quoted unnamed members of South Korea's parliamentary intelligence committee briefed by the spy agency, although the spy agency refused to confirm the reports.

The Associated Press reported that opposition legislator Park Jie-won, a member of the parliament's intelligence committee, told local radio he had been briefed by the government on the North's move.

Mr Park said the regime is "pledging allegiance to Kim Jong-un", it reported.

The Dong-a Ilbo added that the North is teaching its people a song lauding the son - who reportedly enjoys skiing and studied English, German and French at a Swiss school.

There is no confirmed photograph of the adult Kim Jong-un and his age is uncertain. He was born either in 1983 or early 1984, reports say.

Questions have also been raised over whether his late mother, a Japanese-born professional dancer called Ko Yong-hui, was Kim Jong-il's official wife or mistress.

French plane lost in ocean storm

An Air France plane carrying 228 people from Brazil to France has vanished over the Atlantic after flying into turbulence, airline officials say.

The Airbus sent an automatic message at 0214 GMT, four hours after leaving Rio de Janeiro, reporting a short circuit. It may have been damaged by lightning.

It was well over the ocean when it was lost, making Brazilian and French search planes' task more difficult.

France's president said the chances of finding survivors were "very small".

"It is a catastrophe the likes of which Air France has never seen," Nicolas Sarkozy said after meeting relatives and friends of passengers at a crisis centre at Charles de Gaulle airport.

Earlier, Air France chief executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon told reporters: "We are without a doubt faced with an air disaster."

He added: "The entire company is thinking of the families and shares their pain."

Flight AF 447 left Rio at 1900 local time (2200 GMT) on Sunday. It had 216 passengers and 12 crew on board, including three pilots. The passengers included one infant, seven children, 82 women and 126 men.

Air France confirmed that there had been 61 French and 58 Brazilians on board.

Among the other passengers were 26 Germans, nine Chinese, nine Italians, six Swiss, five Britons, five Lebanese, four Hungarians, three Irish, three Norwegians and three Slovaks.

Lightning theory doubts

The Airbus 330-200 had been expected to arrive in Paris at 1110 local time (0910 GMT).

The Airbus A330 airliner is likely to have begun its journey tracking the coast of Brazil northwards before striking out across the Atlantic. A few hundred miles from the shore, radar coverage peters out - from there on, crews use high frequency radio to report their position.

The Brazilian Air Force says the plane left radar screens near the islands of Fernando de Noronha, 230 miles from the coast. The firmest clue to its fate comes from the data message sent via a satellite network at 0214 GMT reporting electrical and pressurisation problems. This suggests whatever happened, happened before the crew could put out a mayday radio call. It was likely a sudden and catastrophic emergency. Even a double engine failure at cruising altitude would normally give the crew around half an hour's gliding time.

Air France says the plane may have been struck by lightning - the cause of around a dozen major air crashes in the last 50 years - but it rarely results in tragedy. More likely lightning damaged electrical systems, possibly leading indirectly to the plane's ditching.

Although passengers survived a landing on the Hudson River in New York in January - it is rarely successful, especially in the middle of an ocean the size of the Atlantic.

It made its last radio contact at 0133 GMT (2233 Brazilian time) when it was 565km (360m) off Brazil's north-eastern coast, Brazil's air force said.

The crew said they were planning to enter Senegalese airspace at 0220 GMT and that the plane was flying normally at an altitude of 10,670m (35,000ft).

At 0220, when Brazilian air traffic controllers saw the plane had not made its required radio call from Senegalese airspace, air traffic control in the Senegalese capital was contacted.

At 0530 GMT, Brazil's air force launched a search-and-rescue mission, sending out a coast guard patrol plane and a specialised air force rescue aircraft.

France is despatching three search planes based in Dakar, Senegal, and has asked the US to help with satellite technology.

"The plane might have been struck by lightning - it's a possibility," Francois Brousse, head of communications at Air France, told reporters in Paris.

David Gleave, from Aviation Safety Investigations, told the BBC that planes were routinely struck by lightning, and the cause of the crash remained a mystery.

"Aeroplanes get hit by lightning on quite a routine basis without generally any problems occurring at all," he told BBC Radio Five Live.

"Whether it's related to this electrical storm and the electrical failure on the aeroplane, or whether it's another reason, we have to find the aeroplane first."

France's minister responsible for transportation, Jean-Louis Borloo, ruled out hijacking as a cause of the plane's loss.

'No information'

Mr Sarkozy said he had met "a mother who lost her son, a fiance who lost her future husband".

Finding the plane would be "very difficult" because the search zone was "immense", he added.

About 20 relatives of passengers on board the flight arrived at Rio's Jobim international airport on Monday morning seeking information.

Bernardo Souza, who said his brother and sister-in-law were on the flight, complained he had received no details from Air France.

"I had to come to the airport but when I arrived I just found an empty counter," he was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

Air France has opened a telephone hotline for friends and relatives of people on the plane - 00 33 157021055 for callers outside France and 0800 800812 for inside France.

This is the first major incident in Brazilian air space since a Tam flight crashed in Sao Paulo in July 2007 killing 199 people.

Penanti: Dr Mansor wins with 6,052 votes out of 7,100

PKR's Dr Mansor Othman(pic) has won 6,052 of the 7,100 votes cast in the Penanti by-election.

He is trailed by Independents Nai Khan Ari (494), Aminah Abdullah (392) and Kamarul Ramizu Idris (56).

Dr Mansor looks all set to become the next Deputy Chief Minister 1.

Polling ended at Penanti on Sunday with a low turnout of 46.1% or 7,100 voters despite fair weather.

Penanti has 15,384 registered voters.

Results are expected to be announced by 8.30pm.

Election Chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said he was disappointed by the low turnout.

“We do not why but we will study the reasons for it,” he said, adding that he had expected a 70% turnout.

The usual buzz and excitement that surrounds by-elections was missing this time as Barisan Nasional had declined to contest.

The Election Commission had strictly enforced the no "pondok panas" rule within 50m of the polling stations, which meant there was no last-minute wooing of voters.

At about 3pm Sunday, 42.2% or 6,492 voters had cast their votes at the nine polling stations.

Although the weather was fine there was only a trickle of voters and traffic flow was smooth.

However, both FRU and police personnel remained on standby for any eventuality. No such eventuality has arisen.

Voters in Penanti comprise 72.68% Malays, 24.44% Chinese, 2.39% Indians and 0.71% of other races.

It was a four-cornered fight with PKR's Mansor Othman taking on three Independents - former Penang PKR Wanita chief, manufacturing manager Nai Khan Ari, 41, and businessman Kamarul Ramizu Idris, 42.

Among the earliest to cast his vote was Nai-Khan Ari at the Kg Tun Sardon community hall at 8.40am.

Earlier, Dr Mansor had visited the Berapit polling station with DAP's Lim Kit Siang and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

Aminah has recently added in a twist to the otherwise peaceful campaign period by claiming that her former party has offered her RM80,000 and the Penang Municipal Council president's post if she withdrew from the contest.

She also alleged that PKR leaders had offered her the Deputy Chief Minister's post if she won.

She has since lodged a report with the Election Commission.

The Penanti seat fell vacant after Mohammad Fairus Khairuddin quit as assemblyman on April 16 after stepping down as Penang Deputy Chief Minister I on April 8.

In the last general election, PKR's Fairus polled 7,346 votes against the 5,127 votes obtained by his Barisan opponent Datuk Abdul Jalil Majid. There were 184 spoilt votes.

Street dancers Diversity were the surprise winners of television contest “Britain’s Got Talent” on Saturday, beating favourite Susan Boyle who became an Internet phenomenon and global celebrity after appearing on the show.

The troupe, which includes three sets of brothers and comes from southeast England, won 100,000 pounds ($160,000) and the right to take the stage at the Royal Variety Performance in front of the Queen.

Of the 10 finalists, Diversity were the bookmakers’ sixth favourite to win going into the show, but their acrobatic performance choreographed by 20-year-old Ashley Banjo was described by judge Simon Cowell as “utter perfection”.

“If I had to give marks on that, that is the only performance tonight I would want to give a 10 to,” Cowell said after their performance.

Boyle was runner-up, but so overwhelming were the betting odds in her favour that the result was seen as a major surprise.

The 48-year-old unemployed church volunteer from Scotland, who once joked she had never been kissed and has been described by newspapers as “frumpy” and a “hairy angel”, was the antithesis of what many considered a celebrity to be.

Yet her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables” in April was downloaded on the Internet more than 150 million times and made her a household name.

Film crews camped outside her home in the small town in Scotland where she lives alone with her cat, tabloid reporters followed her every move and she appeared on U.S. chat shows hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Larry King.

The pressure appeared to tell this week, when she threatened to pull out of the show and had an altercation with journalists.

In his blog, judge Piers Morgan wrote: “Let me tell you now, there is a downside to fame. People start criticising you, sniping at you, trying to trip you up, belittle you, harass you.

He said Boyle had learning difficulties after being deprived of oxygen at birth, and was nicknamed “Simple Susan” at school.

“I am calling today for everyone to just give her a break.”

Boyle sang I Dreamed a Dream again on Saturday, and while her rousing performance was warmly received, it was not enough.

“You’ve had a weird seven weeks and you had every right to walk away from this and you could have walked away,” Cowell said after she sang. “You can walk away from this, win or lose, with your head held high, Susan. I absolutely adore you.”

Boyle, who praised Diversity after the public telephone vote was announced, said earlier in the show that the whole experience had been “well worth it.

“The pressure put on me has been overwhelming. I’ve got to put that aside now. When I step on that stage tonight it’s the accumulation of 40 years of dreaming.”

Despite not winning Britain’s Got Talent, Boyle is widely expected to land a lucrative recording contract as a result of her global fame and impressive voice.

Jaya Supermarket Collapse

Rescue personnel have managed to locate the four workers trapped under the debris of the collapsed Jaya Supermarket.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the workers were near to the three bodies removed from the rubble earlier.

He told reporters after visiting the site that rescue personnel continued to be hampered in their efforts due to the large amount of debris.

Rescue personnel determined the location of the workers from the canine unit and the use of scope.

"I would like to get an explanation from the contractor involved in the demolition on the methods the company has used.

"I am going to put a working paper on this incident. A task force will also be formed to probe the collapse involving the local council, police and the Fire and Rescue Department," he said.

Earlier, another body has been recovered from the rubble of the collapsed Jaya Supermarket building.

The body - believed to be an Indonesian worker - was recovered at 3.30am on Friday.

On Thursday, the building collapsed at 5pm while demolition work was going on, killing three Indonesian workers.

Two other workers were pulled out alive while four more are still trapped under the rubble.

10-subject cap for SPM from next year

Beginning next year, students sitting for SPM will only be allowed to take a maximum of 10 subjects.

Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this was because 90% of all students took a maximum of 10 subjects or less.

“We want to streamline and also make it easier when it comes to giving out scholarships,” he told reporters on Thursday after laying the foundation stone for the new Tunku Kurshiah College.

He added the grading system for the examination will also be improvised to better reflect the academic achievements of students.

An audio recording purportedly a conversation between Independent candidate Aminah Abdullah and PKR supreme council member Cheah Kah Peng and Peter Lim Eng Nam, revealed there were mentions of a Deputy Chief Minister 1’s post and council president’s post being offered.

However, the post of DCM I was offered if the PKR candidate Mansor Othman was disqualified on nomination Day.

“Kalau Mansor hilang layak, Kak Nah akan disokong penuh oleh PKR untuk lawan, menang kerusi itu, jadi TKM. Itu peluang nipis, tetapi kena kira juga. Malik (state exco member Abdul Malik Abul Kassim) and Maktar (Sungai Bakap state assemblyman Maktar Shapee) tak boleh jadi TKM. (If Mansor is disqualified, Kak Nah will get full support of PKR to fight, win the seat and become DCM. That is a small possibility but must be considered. Both Malik and Mohtar cannot become Deputy Chief Minister.),” the duo allegedly were heard saying this during the conversation involving Aminah and her husband, Mohd Rofi over a friendly discussion lasting more than three hours at her house on May 13. Their conversation was purportedly recorded on a cd.

The second offer of the Seberang Prai Municipal Council president’s post apparently would only materialise, if she withdrew from the contest and rejoined the party and sided with the state PKR leaders and Mansor in their quest to oust Penang PKR leader Datuk Zahrain Mohamed Hashim.

Kalau terima counter offer, MPSP YDP siapa lagi? Kita pi rebut itu jawatan untuk Kak Nah, they said. (If the counter offer is accept, who else will become Seberang Prai Municipal Council president? We will go and grab the post for the Kak Nah).

There were also mention of compensation of RM8,000 if Aminah had to forfeit her deposit in the event she had to withdraw from the contest within three days of the nomination day.

The conversation involving Aminah, her husband Mohd Rofi and two other men also touched on the RM80,000 compensation offer either by Mansor or the party for the by-election.

As they discussed, they had lunch. There were sounds of cock crowing in the background and motorcycles passing by. It was also raining quite heavily at the time.

They also talked about two pretty Chinese newspaper reporters, one of whom who got married recently.

They then discussed about chances of Barisan not contesting in Penanti and the possibility of Mansor winning without contest if Barisan, PAS and Aminah withdraw and whether for Aminah to withdraw before or after nomination and that she would lose the deposit then.

Govt Will Not Allow Chin Peng To Return, Says Najib

The Malaysian government will not allow former Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) leader Chin Peng to reside in the country.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the return of the former terrorist would lead to dissatisfaction among the people, especially those who fought the communists and families who lost their loved ones during the CPM's revolt from 1948 to 1981 (known as the Emergency).
Najib said this to reporters at his office at the Perdana Putra building here today.
He was asked to comment on the call by Penang Gerakan chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan for the government to allow Chin Peng to return to Malaysia.
According to Teng, Chin Peng, who is now domiciled in Thailand, no longer posed a threat and as such the government should consider allowing him to return on humanitarian grounds.
The request by Teng drew flak from many quarters, including Defence Minister Datuk Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who described it as insensitive to present and former members of the security forces and families of those who lost their loved ones to the communists during the Emergency.
In other developments, commenting on the Internal Security Act detention of Jemaah Islamiah (JI) leader Mas Selamat Kastari, Najib said the suspect would be held at the Kamunting ISA detention camp for two years to enable the authorities to gain more information on the terrorist network.
He said Mas Selamat's detention was justified as he posed a threat to the security of Malaysia and Singapore.
He added that the security authorities of both countries were in contact on the matter and that Singapore too would have taken similar action had he been in the republic.
Mas Selamat, who escaped from a Singapore prison over a year ago, was captured at a remote village near Skudai in Johor last month.

Hunger strike in Perak: All 19 arrested are released

All 19 Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen and supporters arrested earlier Tuesday were released on police bail about five hours later after having had their statements recorded.

Police had arrested an MP, eight assemblymen, the former state Speaker and five workers from an events management firm that was hired by Pakatan to organise a three-day hunger strike.

Ipoh Barat MP Kulasegaran, Malim Nawar assemblyman Keshvinder Singh and Tronoh assemblyman V. Sivakumar -- also the former State Assembly Speaker -- and his political secretary were arrested while walking from Wisma DAP here to the Ipoh High Court, where Pakatan-appointed Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) heads were filing a suit against the Barisan Nasional state government.

At about the same time, Pakatan reps Thomas Su (Pasir Pinji), Chang Lih Kang (Teja), Lim Pek Har (Menglembu), Leong Mee Meng (Jalong), Chan Ming Kai (Simpang Pulai) and several others were arrested outside Wisma DAP for refusing to disperse.

The hunger strike was, however, allowed to proceed and began at 10:55am. It was aimed at pressing for a dissolution of the State Assembly and for fresh polls to be called.

The hunger strike, involving Pakatan assemblymen in Perak and being led by former Perak mentri besar Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin and Sivakumar, will end at 8pm this Thursday.

The five events-management employees -- three of them reportedly Myanmars -- were arrested while setting up outside Wisma DAP here at about 7am on Tuesday.

More than 10 truckloads of police and members of the Federal Reserve Unit had set up camp as early as 6:30am around the DAP headquarters.

They are believed to have also confiscated some of the material, including a canopy, being set up by the events-management firm.

Meanwhile, Perak DAP chairman Ngeh Koo Ham lodged a report against the police for alleged abuse of power.

He lodged the report at the Ipoh district police headquarters on Tuesday afternoon, not long after he was denied entry to see the Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen and supporters arrested earlier Tuesday.

In PETALING JAYA, Gerakan Youth chief Lim Si Pin urged the police to exercise restraint and rationality.

The five workers of the events-management firm should not have been detained, he said in a press statement.

“A hunger strike is a form of non-violent protest and police should not have intervened,” said Lim, adding that the police action could be misconstrued as having been sanctioned by the Barisan Nasional.

The communists have no place in the country because their sins for killing thousands of people in the then Malaya cannot be forgotten, said Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
As such, he urged leaders who had expressed positive sentiments for the former leader of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP), Chin Peng, to state their stand clearly without hiding behind the cloak of their respective political parties.
"My comment is simple, Chin Peng and his commandos who had killed many people in the past certainly do not deserve any consideration from us," he told reporters after delivering a lecture on 1Malaysia to senior officers of his ministry at Angkasapuri, here Monday.
He said this when asked to comment on the call by the Penang Parti Gerakan that Chin Peng be allowed to return to Malaysia on humanitarian grounds.
Rais also called on Malaysians not to be hasty in following and supporting the innovations made by certain groups particularly bloggers who tried to idolise communism.
"The communists had abused this country and we had been shackled through killings and terrible actions committed by them. The thousands who had died at the hands of the communists should be sufficient for us to be remorseful so that we do not issue statements that can make us forget the atrocities committed by the regime then," he said.
Asked whether the government would take action such as those provided under the Internal Security Act (ISA) against those who tried to give a positive picture of the communists, Rais said he would bring the matter up at the Cabinet meeting later.
"The ISA is not under my jurisdiction, but I'm discussing with the minister concerned so that he too would be prepared to look at such a tendency," he said.
Recently, Penang Gerakan chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan asked the government to allow Chin Peng to return to Malaysia on humanitarian grounds as the communist terrorism which was rampant around the 1950's throughout the world including in China and Russia had undergone transformation.

Two Presidents For PPP?

The political crisis in the People's Progressive Party (PPP) continues to deteriorate when an emergency meeting claimed to be attended by 1,760 delegates from 778 party branches chose Senator Datuk T.Murugiah as the new president.
The latest development gave the impression as though the PPP now has two presidents, while the legitimacy of the emergency meeting held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) today was also being questioned.
However, at a press conference later, Murugiah, who is a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, said the general assembly at the PICC today was valid under the party's constitution.
Responding to a question from the press whether the party constitution provided that only the president could call for the meeting, Murugiah said: "No such thing...legal part leave it to the lawyer to handle it and we too leave all the decision to the ROS (Registrar of Societies), let the ROS investigate".
He said he would meet with the Registrar of Societies tomorrow to hand over the report on the meeting today.
Murugiah said he would inform Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, on the decision reached at the meeting.
Commenting on the existence of two PPP presidents, Murugiah said: "The decision had been made by the delegates and the motion had been passed unanimously to choose me...I was only invited to attend the meeting today.
"So, the issue of two presidents does not exist because (party president Datuk M) Kayveas has been relieved of the post and it is not my decision...because it is the decision of all the delegates."
Before the election was carried out, Murugiah and six other members who had been expelled by the Disciplinary Board earlier for having allegedly committed various offences in the party, were accepted back as party members.
The delegates then agreed to pass a vote of no-confidence against Kayveas and removed him as PPP president.
The delegates also passed the motion to cancel the date for nomination of candidates scheduled for May 31 and postpone the date for the party's general assembly which had earlier been scheduled for June 7.
When contacted, Kayveas said he was still the legitimate president of the PPP, saying that the meeting in Putrajaya was illegal.
"They have misled the police and misused the permit which was issued by the authority for another purpose," he said.
He said Murugiah had no right to call for the meeting as he had already been sacked from the party.

Zambry declared Perak MB, Nizar to appeal

The Court of Appeal has declared Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir the rightful mentri besar of Perak in a unanimous decision on Friday.

It granted Zambry his appeal against an earlier High Court decision declaring Datuk Seri Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin was the rightful mentri besar of Perak “at all material times.”

The three-man bench, comprising Justices Md Raus Shariff, Zainun Ali and Ahmad Maarop, heard submissions Thursday from counsel from both sides.

Nizar’s lawyer Sulaiman Abdullah said he would file a notice of motion to obtain leave to appeal the decision as soon as possible.

Security was tight at the Palace of Justice here Friday as members of the press and public gathered in large numbers.

Only 15 media passes were issued, while the rest had to use public passes. Not all managed to squeeze into the courtroom, which was standing room only.

Only media representative per organisation was allowed. The Star reporter Yeng Ai Chun, who was twittering from the courtroom, was asked to leave before the bench sat.

The courtroom was quiet when the judgement was read out. When one of Zambry’s lawyers tried to hold a press conference outside the courtoom later, he was booed at, forcing police to intervene to prevent a scuffle.

“It is proven that the Sultan has followed the law,” Zambry’s counsel said, referring to the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, who earlier this year asked Nizar to resign, saying he had lost the majority of the House.

“The right to appoint the mentri besar is the prerogative of the Sultan,” the lawyer said.

DAP chairman Lim Kit Siang, who twittered from the courtroom, described it as a “shotgun judgement.”

On May 12, Dr Zambry had filed an appeal to quash High Court (Appellate and Special Powers) Justice Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim’s ruling.

On Feb 13, Nizar had filed for a judicial review against Dr Zambry’s appointment as mentri besar, seeking a declaration that he (Nizar) was the rightful Perak mentri besar and an injunction to bar Dr Zambry from carrying out the duties of mentri besar.

On May 11, the High Court ruled in favour of Nizar, rendering Dr Zambry’s appointment null and void.

However, a day after that, the Court of Appeal granted Dr Zambry a stay of execution, allowing him to remain as mentri besar until his appeal against the High Court ruling was disposed of.

The court was also to hear Nizar’s application to set aside the stay of execution order, but had decided to hear the appeal proper first following the consent of all parties.

PAS tells BN not to bother contesting Manik Urai

PAS told Barisan not to bother to contest the Manik Urai state seat, vacated by the death of assemblyman Ismail Yaacob(pic), 60, who passed away from complications arising from diabetes at 6am on Friday.

"Barisan will surely lose. So it might as well not bother to contest," said PAS Elections Director Datuk Nustafa Ali at a press conference at PAS headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported from Kuala Krai that Kelantan State Assembly Speaker Mohd Nassuruddin Daud will notify the Election Commission of the vacant Manik Urai state seat on Monday.

He said that Friday and Saturday were weekend holidays in Kelantan while Saturday and Sunday were weekend holidays in Kuala Lumpur.

"We will notify the EC of the vacancy on Monday," Mohd Nassuruddin told reporters after paying his last respects to Ismail.

Ismail passed away from complications arising from diabetes at 6am on Friday at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II hospital here.

PAS deputy commissioner II Datuk Nik Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said he would be buried at his home in Manik Urai after Friday prayers.

Hospitalised in April, Ismail leaves a wife, Siti Zaharah Ibrahim, and 10 children.

Ismail, who was deputy head of the PAS Kuala Krai Division, is one of the longest-serving PAS elected representatives in Kelantan.

He first won the Manik Urai state seat in 1985 and has held the seat for five terms.

He did not contest the seat in the general election in 2004, paving the way for Zamzuri Mat Lazim to be the elected representative.

Ismail contested the seat again in the general election last year and defeated Mohamed Zulkifli Omar of the Barisan Nasional with a majority of 1,352 votes.

Manik Urai is one of the four state seats in the Kuala Krai parliamentary constituency, the others being Dabung, Guchil and Mengkembang.

PAS, helmed in Kelantan by Menteri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, retained Kelantan in the general election last year by winning 38 seats. Barisan won six seats and Parti Keadilan Rakyat, one.

Manoharan wants Bumiputra status for all born after independence

Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) leader M. Manoharan(pic) today called for all those born in Malaysia after independence to be accorded Bumiputra status, saying that this would truly unite Malaysians and give 1Malaysia some meaning.

Fresh from being released from Internal Security Act (ISA) detention, M. Manoharan may well be courting trouble again with his speech at a teatime function today.

“I want to meet the prime minister to propose that we accord Bumiputra status to all Malaysians born here after August 31, 1957 to dismantle racial barriers,” he said.

In an interview with The Malaysian Insider later, he said that such a move might give PM Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s 1 Malaysia slogan of unity a chance of bearing some fruit, as it would be the first step towards recognising all citizens as equal Malaysians.

Recognising the sensitivities surrounding Bumiputra status, he explained that it was not meant to impinge on the constitutional rights and privileges of Malays.

“The constitution enshrines the rights of Malays, not Bumiputras, so they can still continue to enjoy their special status. I am not trying to take it away from them,” he said.

The Kota Alam Shah assemblyman added that, along with four other Hindraf leaders released recently from ISA detention, he would resume its 18-point demands to the government which includes affirmative action for ethnic Indians as well as protection for its schools and temples.

In his own capacity as a DAP assemblyman in Selangor’s Pakatan Rakyat government, he hopes to pursue some of these issues.

“I have a masterplan for Selangor. If we solve these three problems – Tamil schools, Hindu temples and graveyards or crematoriums – then we will have solved 90 per cent of Indian problems,” he said.

He said the state government had the power to end these Indian issues as it was in charge of giving out land titles.

“We are asking for nothing more than what are government obligations to its citizens. We are not asking to be prime minister, deputy prime minister or to be astronauts,” he quipped.

Indonesian plane crashes into homes, at least 79 dead

An Indonesian military plane carrying more than 100 people crashed into several homes and burst into flames Wednesday, killing at least 79 people, officials said.

Dozens were injured and more were feared dead, with local television flashing footage of fire engulfing the mangled wreckage. Black smoke billowed in the air as soldiers carried badly burnt bodies on stretchers to waiting ambulances.

Air force spokesman Bambang Sulistyo said at least 79 people were killed when the C-130 Hercules crashed near a base in East Java province early Wednesday. There were 112 passengers and crew on board.

Military spokesman Sagom Tamboen said the aircraft was transporting troops and their families, including at least 10 children, when it tumbled from the sky near an air force base in East Java province.

It smashed into a row of houses in Geplak village, killing three on the ground, before skidding into a rice field.

The tail of the plane and several large parts of its charred body were scattered in the paddy and nearby bushes.

It was not clear what caused the crash, the latest in a string to hit the air force.

But several witnesses described hearing a large explosion while it was still in the air and then seeing it split apart.

“One of the wings fell off,” Agus Yulianto, a villager, was quoted as saying on the website of Kompas newspaper. “Then the plane nose-dived into the houses.”

The accident occurred 520km east of the capital, Jakarta.

The country’s air force has long complained of being underfunded and handicapped by a recently lifted US ban on weapons sales. It has suffered a series of accidents, including a Fokker 27 plane that crashed into an airport hangar last month, killing all 24 on board.

A series of commercial airline crashes in recent years has killed more than 120 people in Indonesia.

IPF To Apply To Join BN

The Indian Progressive Front (IPF) will apply to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for the party to join Barisan Nasional (BN), said its president Puan Sri Jayashree Pandithan(pic).
"We have remained loyal and faithful to the BN for the last 20 years and now it is already 21 years and we are still unable to enter the coalition as a component party.
"I, therefore appeal to Prime Minister to consider wisely our application and bring about a change in the fate of thousands of poor and down-trodden Indians by giving IPF the recognition it wanted over the last 20 years," she told a press conference here Saturday.
IPF would always support BN and was committed to restore the Indian community's support for the coalition, she said.
Jayashree said that she would seek to meet Najib, who is also BN chairman, for the latter to consider the party's application.
On another note, she said irresponsible parties who were trying to deceive and confuse the grassroots with the intention of tarnishing the party's image would face the consequences.
"Now that it is all clear that my leadership which got its new mandate at the party's 16 AGM on Dec 14, 2008 is the legal and legitimate leadership. I would like to urge all the party member to forego the differences and unite under one single banner, which is the IPF formed by the late Tan Sri M.G. Pandithan," she said.
Meanwhile, IPF's legal adviser S. Selvam, who also present at the press conference, condemned the action of former IPF deputy president V. Senggutuan for allegedly abusing the Registrar of Societies (ROS) letter to the party, dated Jan 30, 2009, which declared that the appointment of Jayashree was not in accordance with the Societies Act 1966.
"Jayashree had appointed Youth leader R. Suraienthiran to file for a judicial review to review the ROS letter dated Jan 30, which we did at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Feb 13.
"ROS then wrote to the Attorney General's Office on April 17 to explain that the letter on Jan 30 which is addressed to the party is an ordinary letter in the form of an advice and not a decision or order from the Registrar yang under the Socities Act 1966 (Act 335)," he said.
Selvam said the Attorney General's office had written a letter to his firm dated May 11 advising IPF to withdraw the judicial review pursuant to the letter by ROS dated April 17.
"We will do as advised. The response from ROS and the advice given by Attorney-General's Office confirms the president of IPF is none other than Jayashree, that party's general assembly on Dec 14, 2008 is valid and the removal or suspension of Senggutuan is valid and the issue is now resolve," he said.
On Feb 14, Senggutuan had called a press conference where he claimed that the IPF had plunged into a crisis after the ROS declared as void the election of Jayashree as party president on 14 Dec, 2008.
Among others, Registrar Datuk Md Alias Kalil, in a letter to the party dated Jan 30, 2009, declared that the appointment of Jayashree was not in accordance with the Societies Act 1966.
The ROS in a letter also declared void the suspension of Senggutuan and vice-president M. Mathyalagan and issued a show cause notice to 12 IPF supreme council members concerning Dec 14 AGM.

Muhyiddin: Ahmad Said to remain as Terengganu MB

The Terengganu state government will continue to be helmed by Datuk Ahmad Said as the menteri besar, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin, who is also Umno deputy president, said a change of menteri besar was never raised or discussed.

“Who said (there will be a change in the menteri besar)? So far, I have not heard of anything like that,” he said when asked to comment on talks that there would be a change of menteri besar in the state soon.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, spoke to reporters after launching the national level Teacher’s Day celebration at the Islamic Civilisation Park in Pulau Wan Man Saturday.

There had been talks that several Terengganu Barisan Nasional assemblymen had voiced their dissatisfaction with Ahmad and wanted him to be replaced.

It was speculated that Barisan assemblymen would table a no-confidence vote against Ahmad in the state assembly in April but this did not happen.

However, 10 Barisan assemblymen stayed away from the assembly session on the second day sitting after three of them claimed to have received threats via SMS.

Muhyiddin said he hoped that with his clarification, the political situation in Terengganu would improve because it was more important for Umno and the Barisan to be strong in the state to face the next general election.

“I hope all Umno leaders, including the elected representatives and divisional chairmen, would adopt new approaches to foster greater understanding among themselves.

“The people have given their mandate. We have to focus on developing Terengganu because the state abounds with resources. It garners much revenue and has oil,” he said.

Congress-led coalition wins Indian national election

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh declared victory in India’s national elections on Saturday, saying voters had given the Congress party-led coalition a “massive mandate,” reports The Associated Press.

Manmohan spoke as results indicated his alliance had achieved a sweeping - and surprising - success in the month-long polls that will keep him in power for another term.

“I express my deep sense of gratitude to the people of the country for the massive mandate they have given” the alliance, he said.

The Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, the country’s other main party, failed to convince voters to change the national leadership during a time of economic uncertainty and regional instability.

“We accept the people’s verdict,” said Arun Jaitley, a senior BJP official. “Certainly something did go wrong.”

News channels called the election in Congress’ favour based on more than 70% of votes counted.

The CNN-IBN channel said the Congress-led alliance could win 258 seats in the 543-seat Parliament, and the BJP-led alliance could take 162.

It projected that the Congress party alone - without the support of its coalition allies - would take 198 seats, putting it far ahead of all other parties. Other channels predicted similar results in the massive vote - the largest in the democratic world _ which for logistics and security reasons was held in five phases between April 16 and May 13.

If counting trends continue the same direction, it would be a clear victory for the Congress coalition - but would still leave it short of the 272 seats needed to govern alone and it would require the support of other parties. India has been ruled by coalition governments for most of the last two decades.

However, the results appeared far better for Congress than nearly everyone expected. For months, polls and political observers have predicted that neither of the country’s two main parties would emerge a clear winner, forcing an unstable and unwieldy coalition that could have conceivably included dozens of smaller parties.

Things now appear far clearer: Congress “seems to have the upper hand,” said Venkaiah Naidu, a BJP leader.

The “Third Front,” an alliance of communist, regional and caste-based parties that had banded together - and which for a time had been seen as a wild card that could emerge with immense power _ appeared to have done poorly. Most news stations predicted they would win less than 80 seats.

As results came in, celebrations erupted outside the Congress party headquarters. Party workers set off fireworks and danced in the streets carrying posters of party leader Sonia Gandhi.

“We have won a thumping majority,” Congress activist Parag Jain said outside the party offices, in a leafy, elegant south New Delhi neighbourhood. “Successful rule begins and ends with Congress and the Gandhi family.”

The BJP’s office compound offered a sombre contrast, as supporters and party workers held quiet discussions inside the shuttered gates, decorated with the party symbol of a lotus flower.

The Congress party has long said that Manmohan, 76, an economist and technocrat who helped open India’s economy nearly 20 years ago, would return to power if it won.

But the election appeared to also be a clear victory for Sonia Gandhi’s son, Rahul, who emerged as a key strategist during the campaign and became the party’s most visible face. While a relative political newcomer, he has been increasingly viewed as a future prime minister.

Rahul, 38, is a scion of India’s most powerful family - the son of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, grandson of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and great-grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister. The family was closely allied to the pacifist icon Mohandas Gandhi, though they are not related.

The results also indicated that the communist parties, a traditional power in Indian politics, had dropped from 60 seats to less than half that number.

Prakash Karat, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said it was cause to re-examine their approach, saying they had “suffered a major setback.”

The communist parties had supported Congress for much of the previous term, but broke ties over the Indian-US civilian nuclear agreement, the cornerstone of warmer relations between New Delhi and Washington.

According to the constitution, a new legislature has to be in place by June 2.

The long, gruelling campaign season produced few central issues that resonated across the wildly diverse nation of 1.2 billion people and 714 million eligible voters. Total voter turnout was approximately 60%, the national election commission said, up slightly from 58% in the last national vote in 2004.

11 More Illegals Infected With Leptospirosis

Eleven more illegal immigrants from the Juru detention centre have been admitted to Bukit Mertajam Hospital (HBM) with leptospirosis last night.
State Exco for Health and Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Phee Boon Poh said they were sent to hospital after coming down with fever.
"Since May 7, 35 illegal immigrants have been admitted to HBM. Two others were treated for fever at Seberang Jaya Hospital.
"However, half of them are expected to be discharged soon as they have responded positively to treatment," he told reporters here Saturday.
Newspapers today reported that a Myanmar illegal immigrant died and 26 others were being treated for leptospirosis infection at two hospitals.
Leptospirosis is a rare and severe contagious bacterial infection that affects humans and a wide range of animals.
The infection is commonly transmitted to humans by allowing water contiminated by animal urine like rats or squirrels to come into contact with unhealed breaks in the skin, eyes or the mucuous membrane.
Phee said the Penang Health Department has cleaned up Juru detention centre and destroyed animals responsible for the outbreak of leptospirosis.
He said residents in the vicinity should not panic as the disease was under control as measures have been taken to clean up the surrounding areas.
Leptospirosis is also known as canicola fever, Fort Bragg fever or Weil's disease or syndrome.

Second Influenza A Case Confirmed, In Penang

he Health Ministry Saturday announced that the country's second case of Influenza A (H1N1) has been detected in Penang as the authorities continue to trace passengers of Wednesday's Malaysia Airlines flight from Newark to Kuala Lumpur which had flown in the two flu-stricken cases.
Deputy Director-General of Health Dr Ramlee Rahmat said the second case was confirmed this morning and the patient, a friend of the first case who was under quarantine at the Sungai Buloh Hospital in Selangor state, was under treatment at the northern state of Penang Hospital.
"The patient is in stable condition and does not have any fever now," he told a news conference at the ministry here.
Dr Ramlee said the patient's family was being quarantined at home for seven days to ensure that they were free of the disease, and that they were reported to be in stable condition.
He also said that the ministry had identified all the people who might have come into contact with the two patients on board the flight, MH091, from Newark.
He said Flight MH091 had flown in to Kuala Lumpur 192 passengers and 15 crew, and that 119 of the passengers were still in the country, comprising 81 Malaysians and 38 foreigners.
"The other 73 passengers had taken onward flights to other countries on the same day, May 13," he added.
Dr Ramlee said 35 passengers had contacted the ministry and that the ministry had also circulated a list of the passengers in the country to all state health departments for follow-up action.
He said three passengers on transit in Malaysia on May 13 had also been quarantined at the Sungai Buloh Hospital for observation until May 20.
"It is unnecessary for the people to panic because the detection of fresh cases only shows that the national health system is operating at the optimum level," he said, adding that the ministry would take all necessary measures to handle the situation.

Malaysia confirms first case of A(H1N1) flu

Malaysia on Friday confirmed its first case of the A(H1N1) flu in a 21-year-old student who returned from the United States on Wednesday morning.

All the 192 passengers on the Malaysia Airlines flight MH091 from Newark on Wednesday are urged to contact the Health Ministry by calling 03-88810200 or 03-88810300

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the case made Malaysia the 36th country to be affected by the virus.

“Malaysia is now on high alert,” said Liow, who is in London now, enroute to Geneva, for a World Health Organisation meeting. He added he would return earlier than his scheduled return next Friday.

Meanwhile, A statement by the Health Ministry's director-general, Dr. Ismail Merican, said the young man was hospitalised on Thursday for fever, sore throat and body aches.

Tests confirmed that he was infected with the A(H1N1) virus, the statement said. He is receiving anti-viral treatment and was in stable condition, it said.

Ismail said the ministry had contacted members of his family but they have not been placed under quarantine.

Ismail said his department was taking steps to protect public health and that there was no reason to panic.

Meanwhile, in Putrajaya, acting Health Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said later Friday that the fact that Malaysia’s first A(H1N1) patient managed to pass through the scanners at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) undetected was in no way indicative of scanners’ failure.

Kong said the scanners installed since the start of the global alert on the disease traced elevated body temperature levels in travellers coming into the country and did not pick out the 21-year-old student flying in from the United States as the symptoms were not showing yet.

He said the virus had a two to three day incubation period during which none of the symptoms linked to the disease were visible and that was why he passed undetected by the scanner after his flight landed at 7.15am on Wednesday.

He said the Health Ministry would continue to use the scanners at entry points and continue with all the precautionary measures it had taken since the global alert was first issued and there were no plans to tighten measures further.

“The ministry has taken all the possible precautionary measures to control and contain the disease after the WHO (World Health Organisation) issued a level five alert so we are calling on the public not to panic as the situation is under control.

“I also want to assure the people that we will make public any information related to the disease that we have just as we did with our first case confirmed today,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that a man from Bukit Mertajam held under observation at the isolation ward of the Penang Hospital has been declared free of Influenza A (H1N1).

"We just got a report that the blood test on the 26-year-old man was negative," State Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said when contacted by Bernama Friday.

A test on a sample of his blood had been sent to Kuala Lumpur.

The man was kept for observation Thursday after he was found to have fever and symptoms similar to those of Influenza A (H1N1) on his return from the United States.

Two weeks ago, a New Zealand tourist was admitted to the isolation ward of the hospital for suspected Influenza A (H1N1) but a blood test also showed up negative.

Perak crisis: Decision only on May 18

The Court of Appeal will hear next Monday Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin’s application to set aside the stay of execution order granted to Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.

Nizar, who filed his application through the law firm of Messrs Leong and Tan at 2:20pm here on Wednesday, is seeking a three-man bench to discharge the Court of Appeal’s order which was handed down on Tuesday.

The stay order was granted by Justice Ramly Ali, who sat alone. Zambry’s stay application was heard and granted within hours of it being filed on Tuesday.

In his notice of motion Wednesday, Nizar said alternatively, the court could vary the stay of execution order to include conditional terms as it deemed fit.

“I have been advised by my lawyers that a declaratory relief cannot be stayed. The High Court on Monday had declared that I am the rightful mentri besar at all material times.

“Therefore, the Court of Appeal, with all due respect, had wrongfully made the stay of execution order and I am applying to right the situation,” he said.

On Monday, the High Court declared Nizar as the valid Perak Mentri Besar, ruling that his office had not been vacated when Zambry was appointed.

Following an application by Zambry, the Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday that he remained the Perak mentri besar until his appeal against the High Court ruling was disposed of.

No date has yet been set to hear Zambry’s appeal.

Nizar added that if the stay order remained in effect, it would again steal his rights and render the High Court’s decision ineffective.

“It would also substantively mean that Zambry would be carrying out the responsibilities, functions and duties as an unlawful mentri besar, and head an invalid government.

“It would also confuse the rakyat (people) and civil servants in Perak as to who is the rightful mentri besar and who are his state executive councillors,” Nizar said, adding that it would only cause the state’s political instability to worsen and deepen the constitutional crisis further.

Sarawak Assembly suspends Opposition leader for a year

Opposition leader Wong Ho Leng (pic) (DAP-Bukit Assek) has been suspended from the Sarawak State Assembly for 12 months for a “camouflage” remark he made against a senior minister last November.

Speaker Datuk Mohamad Asfia Awang Nasar made the decision Wednesday after the matter was put to the vote and the majority of assemblymen were in favour of suspending Ho Leng under Section 14(1) of the Dewan Undangan Negeri (Privileges and Powers) Ordinance.

Ho Leng, who was given 10 minutes to speak by Asfia, protested that his suspension was procedurally wrong as Section 14(1) did not provide for any punishment to be carried forward into the assembly’s next session.

He said that under the Section, action should have been taken against him during last November’s sitting when he used the word “camouflage” in seeking clarification from Second Finance Minister Datuk Wong Soon Koh on the tabling of the Supplementary Supply (2008) Bill.

Furthermore, he said the suspension could not last beyond Dec 31 this year when the current session of the State Assembly ends.

“Under the section, any suspension automatically lapses at the end of the current session,” he said.

Later, at the State Assembly’s entrance, Ho Leng said it was very unfortunate that he had been suspended.

“It’s a very sad day. Unfortunately, in the Dewan Undangan Negeri, might is right,” he said.

Last November, Soon Koh tabled a motion referring Ho Leng to the Committee of Privileges for the “camouflage” remark.

He said Ho Lengs remark had imputed that he had an improper motive to conceal or hide a RM900mil expenditure which he had sought so as to deceive the August House to approve the money.

Ho Leng appeared before the committee on Dec 12 to defend himself.

Selangor land scam going back 20yrs

A special committee under the Selangor government has uncovered a land scam spanning more than 20 years, during which time the state has seen five different mentris besar.

Plots of land in a squatter resettlement area in Taman Selayang Mutiara, Selangor, have been allocated to a variety of people, including grassroots politicians and two people who were only five years old at the time, while the names of some of those actually eligible for the land have been deleted from the list.

The Bukit Botak resettlement scheme started in 1985 when large tracts of land were pledged to the 1,634 original squatters, many of whom are still waiting for their lots.

A special committee formed under Selangor Housing, Building Management and Squatters Committee chairman Iskandar Abdul Samad (pic) revealed that 81 of the landowners were under 18 years old. Of that number, 37 were below 12 when they were assigned the plots.

Suspecting irregularities and discrepancies in the way the plots had been allocated, Iskandar said current Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim ordered the land office last year to stop giving out titles to the remaining people.

“We are serious about resolving the Bukit Botak squatters issue and will do everything possible to ensure justice is done," Iskandar said.

Nizar seeks to bury stay order

Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin is applying today to set aside yesterday's Court of Appeal order to stay his declaration as the rightful mentri besar of Perak.

A lawyer for Nizar told The Malaysian Insider the legal team will be filing the application at the same court in Putrajaya after lunch.

Court of Appeal judge Datuk Ramly Ali had yesterday granted Barisan Nasional's (BN) Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir's request to suspend the declaration, effectively preventing Nizar from carrying out the duties of an MB until his appeal proper is heard.

Zambry had filed his appeal early yesterday morning.

Nizar had sued Zambry in the High Court for "usurping" the MB's post in February.

High Court judge Datuk Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim decided in Nizar's favour last Monday.

Justice Abdul Aziz ruled that Nizar was the lawful MB, noting he had not resigned nor been officially removed by members of the Perak Legislative Assembly, which can only be carried out through a vote of no confidence tabled against him on the floor of the assembly.

Zambry Insulted(in a way...) Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela

Datuk Dr Zambry Kadir invited scorn and ridicule today by invoking the name of Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi to describe his political challenges.

“Nelson Mandela sacrificed his freedom for 27 years to free the people of South African from apartheid.

“Mahatma Gandhi, on the other hand, sacrificed his life to ensure India’s independence," he wrote in a posting on his blog today.

He then went on to compare his endurance of what he said were the Pakatan Rakyat's (PR) politics of hatred to what the South African and the Indian icons of the struggle against oppressive regimes.

Zambry acknowledged, however, that his political struggles did not result in him suffering any physical harm or the loss of his liberty.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) man was appointed the mentri besar of Perak in February in a power grab which saw the downfall of the PR government, but yesterday a High Court decision declared his rival Datuk Seri Nizar Jamaluddin as the rightful chief executive of the state.

This morning, Zambry managed to obtain a stay from the Court of Appeal.

In his blog posting, Zambry also accused PR leaders of being greedy for power.

Besides Mandela and Gandhi, the BN man also borrowed the words of Martin Luther King, the American civil rights leader who was assassinated in the 1960s.

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.''

He claimed the negative perception of his leadership was spread by lies in opposition publications and Internet news websites.

Zambry said that despite the challenges he faced, he would continue fighting for “justice and the interest of the public”.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said in a statement that Zambry’s comparison of himself to Gandhi and Mandela would cause “all round derision, outrage and revulsion.”

“If Zambry dreams of being a Gandhi, he would not want to be an illegitimate and unlawful mentri besar even for a second,” he said.

He said the stay given by the Court of Appeal today prevented Nizar from taking back what he claims is the PAS man’s legitimate position as MB, but did not overturn yesterday’s High Court declaration.

“Zambry went against everything Gandhi stood for in announcing that he would again 'gate-crash' the Perak state secretariat building tomorrow to 're-occupy' the MB’s office,” he said.

The Court of Appeal has granted a stay of execution on yesterday's High Court decision which recognised Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as the rightful Perak menteri besar.

This means Nizar can't execute his duties as Perak MB until The Court of Appeal make a decision. It is still unclear has Nizar got the Perak Regent, YM Dr Nazrin's consent to dissolve the state assembly.

Transport Minister, Ong Tee Keat's Briefcase is Stolen

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Kiat lost a briefcase when his friend’s Toyota Estima was broken into in Taman Perling, here.

Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said police received a report from Ong’s friend, believed to be a MCA member, at about 5pm yesterday, claiming his car was broken into and the briefcase was also missing.

“The 46-year-old victim was reported to have parked the car in the housing area. Also stated in the report made at the Perling police station was that a briefcase belonging to Ong’s bodyguard was missing,” he told reporters at the Johor police headquarters, here, today.

Mohd Mokhtar said following the incident, police arrested 11 people aged between 25 and 30 to help in the investigation.

He said the briefcase was believed to contain several important documents, but police had not yet recorded a statement from Ong.

Embattled PPP leader T. Murugiah has received two bullet casings and a note which warned him against contesting for any posts in the coming party elections.

It is also stated in the note that if he challenges PPP President, M.Kayveas for the President post, he will receive life bullet next.

Lately, it has been rumoured that Murugiah is going to challenges for president post although he has denied it. Few days back, the party's Supreme Council

suggested to sack him from the party on the basis of money politics.

Recently, in a online poll, T. Murugiah was chosen as the most popular malaysian indian politician. His popularity exceeds even his president. Some sectors are said to be uncomfortable with the fact.

Nizar is the Rightful Menteri Besar of Perak

Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin was declared the rightful Perak Menteri Besar by the High Court here Monday.
With the decision, the question of who is the rightful Menteri Besar -- Nizar or Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir -- which has plunged the state into political turmoil for more than 100 days, was finally answered.
High Court (Appellate and Special Powers Division) judge Datuk Abdul Aziz Abd Rahim ruled that Nizar did not vacate the office of Menteri Besar as he had not lost the majority confidence of the state legislative assembly.
In this case, said Abdul Aziz, there was no vote of no confidence issued against Nizar.
"How can one say that the applicant (Nizar) had lost his majority confidence under Article 16(6) of the Perak Constitution?"
"Based on the democratic practice, the issue of the loss of majority confidence should only be taken by a vote of no confidence against the applicant (Nizar), only by this manner can a Menteri Besar be removed," Abdul Aziz, said in his written judgment which was delivered at 2.30pm.
On Feb 13, Nizar, 52, filed an application to the court for a declaration that he is at all material times the rightful Menteri Besar of Perak.
Nizar, who was appointed Menteri Besar on March 17 last year after the opposition alliance won 31 seats at the 12th general elections, also sought a declaration that Zambry has no right to hold the office of Menteri Besar.
Abdul Aziz, in his judgment, said that a Menteri Besar could not be dismissed by the Sultan of Perak for the reason that he did not hold the office at the sultan's pleasure.
The dismissal of the Menteri Besar by the Sultan of Perak was never contemplated by Article 16(6) of the Perak Constitution, he added.
Abdul Aziz said that although the Sultan of Perak had the prerogative power in a Menteri Besar's appointment, a Menteri Besar, once appointed, was only answerable to the members elected in the state legislative assembly, and no one else.

Barisan Nasional will appeal the High Court ruling on Monday that declared Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin as the rightful Perak Mentri Besar, and not Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.

The appeal would be filed on Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

In the meantime, he urged the people of Perak to remain calm while "the situation is resolved."

Pakatan Rakyat is however adamant that there is no "situation."

“This is a great day for the rakyat (people) because the Law and the Constitution are the true winners,” Nizar said in a statement.

“It is a historic day for all who love democracy and it will be remembered for years and years to come. Its positive effects for revitalising parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy is tremendous,” he said.

He said that everyone from both sides of the political divide would benefit from this ruling “because an independent judiciary is absolutely essential for the well-being of any country and its people.”

Nizar said that all previous decisions made by the Dr Zambry administration would be subject to review but not invalidated except for the tumultous May 7 sitting.

He also suspended the state legal adviser with immediate effect.

This would be the greatest constitutional crisis in Malaysia State Assembly history. Starting from the frog-jumping of 3 former Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen to become Barisan National-friendly, until the fights in the assembly hall today, everything is a part of our great history. The lawfully elected speaker has been dragged out of the august hall in a bad manner. Reps and civilians been arrested outside the building. All these suffering and challenges faced by people in order to champion the people-oriented democracy would be easily overcome by just dissolving the state assembly and have a fresh state election.

However for now, let us watch what is going on.

08 April - Enam Menteri Kabinet Dijangka Gugur

KUALA LUMPUR: Sekurang-kurangnya enam menteri mungkin digugurkan dalam Kabinet baru yang dijangka diumumkan Datuk Seri Najib Razak, hari ini.

Perdana Menteri juga dijangka mengecilkan Kabinetnya dengan menggabungkan beberapa kementerian, selain mewujudkan semula jawatan Setiausaha Parlimen yang dimansuhkan selepas pilihan raya umum tahun lalu.

Difahamkan Najib sudah menerima perkenan Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin pagi semalam berhubung pelantikan barisan Kabinet barunya.

Antara menteri yang dikatakan akan digugurkan ialah Menteri Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, yang tewas jawatan Timbalan Presiden MCA pada pemilihan parti itu, tahun lalu.

Menteri Kemajuan Luar Bandar dan Wilayah, Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib; Menteri Pelancongan, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman dan Menteri Dalam Negeri, Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar, yang turut kalah dalam pemilihan Umno, bulan lalu, juga dijangka digugurkan.

Dua menteri lain dijangka digugurkan ialah Menteri di Jabatan Perdana Menteri, Tan Sri Amirsham A Aziz dan Menteri Kewangan Kedua, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop. Menteri Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna, Datuk Shahrir Samad pula meletak jawatan, berkuat kuasa hari ini, selepas tewas pada pemilihan Umno.

Bagaimanapun, Menteri Luar, Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim yang kalah dalam perebutan jawatan Naib Presiden, dijangka dikekalkan.

Difahamkan, Ketua Wanita Umno, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil dan Presiden Gerakan, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon akan dilantik sebagai Senator untuk diserapkan dalam Kabinet baru. Shahrizat dijangka mengetuai kementerian lamanya, Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat.

Bekas menteri, Datuk Seri Dr Jamaluddin Jarjis juga dikatakan akan kembali ke Kabinet, manakala Timbalan Menteri Kewangan, Datuk Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah; Timbalan Menteri Kesihatan, Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad; Timbalan Menteri Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan, Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin akan dinaikkan pangkat menjadi menteri.

Tiga Naib Presiden Umno diramal bertukar portfolio dengan Datuk Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi ke Kementerian Dalam Negeri; Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein ke Kementerian Perdagangan Antarabangsa dan Industri, manakala Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal bertukar ke Kementerian Pertahanan.

Antara kementerian dikatakan akan digabungkan ialah Kementerian Kebudayaan, Kesenian dan Warisan yang diserapkan ke Kementerian Pelancongan; Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi disatukan dengan Kementerian Pelajaran, manakala Kementerian Perusahaan Perladangan dan Komoditi bergabung dengan Kementerian Pertanian dan Industri Asas Tani.

Pensyarah Kolej Undang-Undang, Kerajaan dan Pengajian Antarabangsa Universiti Utara Malaysia, Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, berkata pengecilan saiz Kabinet akan menjadi perkara pokok dalam pentadbiran Najib bagi memudahkan pengurusan dan melicinkan pentadbiran.

Beliau menjangka dua pemimpin Umno Sabah, Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh dan Datuk Anifah Aman turut dilantik sebagai menteri.

Sementara itu, Presiden Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, ketika ditemui selepas bertemu Najib di Putrajaya semalam berkata beliau sudah menyerahkan senarai nama pimpinan parti itu untuk dilantik sebagai menteri atau timbalan menteri.

Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahrizat win UMNO Election

I have waiting whole night long postponing my exam studies just to get know the results.

At around 10pm, Shahrizat Abdul Jalil (507 votes) crushed incumbent Rafizah Aziz (280 votes) by 277 votes majority to win the UMNO Women Chief post. This shows clearly the women wing wants new leader and a fresh mandate has been delivered to Shahrizat.

Meanwhile, Khairy won the UMNO Youth Chief post only after recount. He received 304 votes. Khir Toyo and Mukhriz got 254 and 232 votes respectively. Earlier, there were rumours going on that Mukhriz has won by a slight margin. But recount proved not. Have you watch newly released documentary movie, Nostradamus 2012 or heard about the book , "The Prophecies, by M. Michel Nostradamus"?

For those whose who don't , here are few brief info on it. The book contain prophecies on many things that has happened and going to happen. For example, it has been used to correctly predict the 9/11 attack (Al Qaeda attack on US' World Trade Center). Some says it has predicted World War 1 and the Gulf War. Although, this these are predicted well before the incidents, the prophecies are not scientifically supported. That is why it the book cannot be relied by authorities.

Recently my friend informed me about one prophecies about Malaysia's prime minister list. He said it is from the same person who predicted the 9/11 attack. According to him, Malaysia's last prime minister will be Najib bin Abdul Razak. His basis was the name of malaysia's first prime minister, RAHMAN. Each letter of the name RAHMAN represents the capital of name of Malaysia's prime minister so far. Details are as following:

A : Abdul Razak (2nd PM)

H : Hussein Onn (3rd PM)

M : Mahathir (4th PM)

A : Abdullah Badawi (5th PM)

Do you this think arrangement of names is truly a sign from the prophecies or just a coincidence? I was shocked for a minute upon realising it!

According to to him also, Malaysia will be 'destroyed' after the 6th prime minister. This is the part that really got me chilled to the bone. Thinking about that, if Barisan Nasional ( ruling party under all the 6 prime minister ) is going to loose in the next general election(2013), there might be a big havoc created leading to fight all over Malaysia, worse than May 16 1969 incident- Racial Clash. This of course will 'destroy' our country. Besides that, there might be a great natural disaster which will 'destroy' Malaysia. This assumption runs parallel to the prediction from Nostradamus which says that the world will end in 2012 (watch the documentary movie, Nostradamus 2012). In this case, not only Malaysia but the whole world will be destroyed! According to the documentary, it is a massive cosmic collision that will cause the natural disaster in 2012.

Note : All these happens when Najib is still in his term as prime minister (expected).

For your information, the issue of world ending in 2012 is hotly debated among western academicians. However, they are not made public to ensure not to create public unrest, just like how the UFO cases are being covered by US government. For now, the World War 3 and execution of current pope has been predicted.

Amid uncertainty in global economical and political situation, the Hindus are keeping the spirit of Thaipusam alive with carrying on the activities often seen during this auspicious day. This time around I am celebrating this special day with Penangites in Penang, Malaysia. Penang is another place in Malaysia where Thaipusam is celebrated in grand besides Batu Caves, Selangor. The special in Penang celebration is that we will be able to see a larger variety of people with different believes together celebrate with Hindus. Food, as we know, is an important element that provides energy for us to continue living. Over the centuries, role of food have changed from merely tackling hunger into an art of taste. Nowadays, preparing food in its best way is a must for most of us (not for poor people suffering from famine). Comparing men and women, for sure, men are having higher level of yearning for taste. Men always have higher level of taste expectation. This is where women can control man. Since ancient days, women were forced or to say, given responsibility by men, to cook for them. Since then, women have improved themselves into good cook for their family. They have been satisfying the taste expectation of their husband or partner. This is how it has been until middle of last century. Role of woman started to change from house wife into country’s work force. The new role hinders them from handling house chores especially cooking to some extent, for most of them. Consequently, they can’t satisfy their spouse’s high need for taste satisfaction. Here is where all problems started and created a phenomenon where there are more male chefs. Not only that, they are better and more famous. Man started to do the job-cooking; by themselves.
Second is through sex. Men are very weak emotionally when it comes sex. Many incidents in history and modern day happenings have shown to us that man can manipulated using sex. Many great leaders have fallen from power because of sex tricks from enemies. Even today, many politicians are trapped using sex bait to jeopardize their political career. Men have dominant on ancient days when it comes to having sexual intercourse. This is because men are created to have higher hunger level for sex. They are more easily sexually aroused than women. One modern day example is the abdication of a England King. He was said to be addicted to sex from his girlfriend, who is a America. According to law, the Queen must be a royal also. But, the England King was willing to abdicate to marry his girlfriend. As long as, women are able to fulfill men’s sexual expectation, they are in control of men. When this trend is broken nowadays due to situation where more women are getting busy with other obligations, men turn to other way to fulfill their sexual needs. This caused increase the demand for prostitution and incidents of infidelity. The gay relationship is also due to this factor. They are willing to spend big portion of their income, time and energy for these unhealthy activities just to satisfy their inner sexual needs. If only women all women understand and take the suitable actions to satisfy their partners, none of this vice activities will prevail.
These 2 ways- Food and Sex are well proven to be a effective tool for women to manipulate men since ancient times. If all women managed to master these 2 tools and consequently control their men, the normal and healthy life style the world missed today might just come back. Don’t you miss the nice days? Hi Netters, Yesterday I got the opportunity to meet with a friend of mine who was one of the victims of the 14th of May disturbances/riots. She lives in an apartment in Pluit.

She has one little sister and one little brother. She lives with her family in this apartment. Around 9:15am the apartment was surrounded by hundreds of people who looked very threatening. They screamed like devils, 'Butcher the Chinese.' 'Let's eat the pigs.' 'Let's party.'

Our family was on floor 7. At that time, we were phoned by a family who lived on the third floor, and told that the masses had already gone up to the second floor and furthermore that the occupants were being chased upstairs. We immediately felt afraid, but in that fear we prayed and made pleas to God. After that, we prepared to leave the room, and we went up the stairs to the top floor, because it was no longer possible to go downstairs. We went up to the 15th floor and there we stayed in the room of an acquaintance. It wasn't long after that we were surprised by a number of people coming out of the lift at the precise moment we went in, so we quickly went in and locked the door.

At that moment we heard the door of another room being pounded on and we could hear many screams coming from women and little girls. At that moment we felt extremely threatened in the room, and we were aware that the room we were in would get its turn, so we immediately dispersed and hid in corners of the room. From inside we could hear the cries of girls from around 10-12 years screaming, "Mummy, mummy," "mum, it hurts..." At that moment I didn't know what was happening.

After almost half an hour of waiting, when the situation began to abate, and the voices began to recede, we made ourselves have the courage to go and see. And after we left, really what we saw.... Can not be mentioned... We saw many people passed out on the floor, many small children and young girls stretched out... Oh God... the things that had happened... my little sister (Veny) screamed and screamed hysterically seeing it all, and she flew into my fathers arms. Seeing that, I also cried...

Eventually, with our friends, a newly wed couple, we went down the stairs. At the tenth floor, numerous screams for help were audible. Because those screams were so clearly heard, we were moved to enter that floor. But at the moment we turned the corner, we were surprised by the large number of people. And I saw with my own eyes a girl of around 20 years being raped by 4 men. She tried to fight but she was restrained.

Seeing that we ran as fast as we could... But calamity... Veny was quickly caught by those people. And my family and I tried to save her but there were about 60 of them. Finally my family, papa, mama, me, Veny and Doni also as well as the husband and wife, Dodi and Vera, were tied up with torn sheets. They carried us into a room. Dodi at that moment had already asked them what they wanted, but they didn't answer, their appearances were very evil and cruel.

One of them grabbed Veny roughly and dragged her onto the sofa, at that moment I knew that Veny was in danger, and I tried to yell as loud as I could and one of them slapped me, then it was my father who also yelled out and was hit with a wooden beam until he passed out, my mother had already passed out from the moment she saw them drag Veny away. At that moment, I just prayed to God, oh God, don't let this disaster come upon us... Dodi, who at that moment continued to try to persuade them with offers of money but without success. And...eventually Veny was raped forcibly by them. I couldn't stand to watch that or hear Veny's screams, so I cried and closed my eyes tightly... There were about 5 people raping Veny, and every one began with the cry, "My god is great"... They are sadists... They are cruel... they appeared furious...

Not long after about another 9 people entered the room and pulled me and I saw Vera also dragged away. At that stage I passed out... and didn't know what was happening... I woke up at around 5-6pm, with a headache and I only then became aware that I was naked, and then I cried, I felt very ashamed, I remembered that my family were still there, and I saw with blurred vision my father hugging my mother and Doni. I saw Dodi stretched out on the floor, while Vera cried over his body. I didn't have the strength to arise. I tired eventually and slept again.

The following day I was in the hospital in Pluit. Beside me were my mother and father. Still aching all over, I asked, "ma... why me, what's happened to me, ma?" But I felt very sick when I said that. My cheeks felt swollen. My mother straight away started to cry and couldn't speak. Whereas my father smiled whilst holding back his tears.

I was nursed for about four days before I started to recover. And my father told me what had happened with a sympathetic expression... When I fainted, I was raped by around 7 people, my father couldn't see clearly because he was dizzy from being hit with a wooden beam. They raped me, turning my body this way and that and ramming me against the wall. And after that, dad said... "Vivian, Veny has gone..." I was confused and didn't know why I started to cry, and maybe my cries could have even heard outside the room... "Why dad????" He didn't reply... He told me to rest and left the room. Then I cried and cried as though life had no meaning any more.

Once all that had finished, a week ago, I came home from the hospital to my relative's house and only then was I told what had happened. Evidently, when Veny was raped, she tried to fight them, and because of that she was repeatedly slapped by those uncouth people, and the final effort Veny made to fight, she spat on one of them. Upset, he took a knife (I don't know of what sort) and straight away drove the knife into her stomach, and like an animal, brutally, repeatedly slashed the knife into Veny's stomach, until finally Veny drew her last breath with blood flowing all over her body. When I heard that I went into shock, and dad told me that Dodi had also had the same thing happen to him, and eventually drew his last breath watched by Vera who was also a victim of rape. God.... Why must this happen??? Then Vera was taken by her elder sibling to live at her parents house, and according to the news from her sibling, she is still in shock and has withdrawn into herself, even frequently refusing to eat. And, my mother was also withdrawn. My mother and I until this day, still cry every hour over what happened, and I can not forget that day. Although they are human, their brutality was inhuman.

Fellow netters, while I tell of this, there is much which I cannot say in words, and while I am telling it, I can not stop my tears from flowing. And hearing similar stories from a number of other friends, almost all had the same cries of, "My god is great," by those evil people. Do they consider their actions a holy war?

To you teachers of Islam, your religion is the religion of the majority, but the good people who have love towards others in your religion are in the minority. However with the religions of Christianity, Buddhism and Hindu, which are minority religions, the good people who have love for one another are of the majority in those religions. As a suggestion to you teachers of Islam, we respect your religion just as we respect our own, your religion is a good religion, but the teachers who don't teach love, just listen to sermons on the radio, 98.5FM or 95.4FM if I'm not mistaken. There you hear direct teaching sermons broadcast from a mosque in Jakarta, you know what is taught there by the speakers is that the followers of Islam must rise, revenge, oppose Christians, oppose Chinese, oppose the Government. Oh you hypocritical teachers, if you do not teach mutual love and respect between people of your own religion as well as between religions, I am certain that your religion will stay the majority but with a quality of people which is more and more degenerate and with a people who are more and more volatile. REMEMBER! You who teach, you will receive the strictest judgement from God. [from James 3:1] Repent!

Fathima Idris: The February 2005 issue of the National Geographic had a feature on Shah Rukh Khan and he related the following to the writer:

And to top his conceit now we have a Datukship conferred on him. Perhaps I must revise my view about the shrine to him. It would look like there might be one somewhere in Malaysia, maybe somewhere in Malacca though.

Think what will happen when all men on this world found out that they are actually part of a woman. And they are incomplete compared to woman, as to say about the chromosomal difference. This will havoc all around the world. Men are seen lower than women in all aspects. Women, on the other hand, will start to take control of all the institution which was previously controlled by men. Starting from small institutions such as family until leading world, the position of women on the hierarchy will change and surely, rise to the top.
This is the reason why this theory will get greatest objection from all ranks of the society. Government financial backup to do researches in order to prove this theory will be halted because governments also are being controlled by men. Oppositions from political, social and economical sector will try their heart out to trash out the theory. But for now, there are researches going on to prove this theory in United States of America and Europe. Even if they managed to uncover the truth, it is doubtable that, will they publish the results? , when being under pressure of many sector. We just have to wait and see.
Science is proving from day to day that human are produced from the process of evolution. Well, it might be not from Ape as said by Charles Darwin, but humans don’t just pop up on earth. Even if you are a person who believes that God creates and controls everything, why don’t you think that it is His wish to be so. Well, you should give a deep thought on it. It can be hypothetically deduced that male is from female. This can be proven genetically. The chromosome 23 is responsible for reproduction ability in animal (human). In female, the chromosome is XX. Meanwhile, in male, it is XY. If observed in detail, Y is a structure with only 1 of 2 base stands of X gene. Put into word scientifically, half part of one of the allele is lost.
This shows that the chromosome Y in male is a part of chromosome X in female. This can explain that man is actually evolved from female. A group of females have evolved into group humans having chromosome Y, which we now call as male. But, how this is possible?
Few factors might have lead to creation of male from female or to say accurately, the formation of chromosome Y from chromosome X. First, the loss of the 1 stand might be due to mutation. The mutation is caused by exposure to radioactive or intense cosmic ray which destroys part of the chromosome X into Y. This is effect of meteor or explosion of universal (outer space) elements.
Second, gradual evolution of human genetic structure due to change of environment. At that time, animal (humans) were moving in groups to many places around the globe. They are in a diversed climate and weather which are greatly different from the previous habitat (home). This also might have induced the chromosomal modification. These are the major factors that caused change in chromosome X structure. Since they are not in human form but in a non-complex organism form, the structural difference on chromosome X occurs easily. Later, these organisms evolved into human and many other organisms which are divided into male and female.
